Welcome to my beautiful world.
“I love life, even when I don’t like it. I have a taste for everything. The least little thing, the humblest, reflects the light and has its own little story, which may be amusing, or pathetic, to discover and then to reveal. All that I see is intoxicating to me — all the richness and variety of each instant in the middle of which we stand, helplessly, porous while life flows through us and we finish up trembling with poetry and with love.”
~ Léon-Paul Fargue
I cannot introduce this collection of photography any better than by sharing this abbreviated quote by Léon-Paul Fargue (Paris, 1876-1947). My father sent me out of the nest with these words and they have remained an inspiration to this day. Thanks, Dad!
When I got my first camera at 17 in 1983 (a Canon AE-1), I learned to develop film and print my own black & white photographs with my involvement in my high school newspaper. I also learned to see beauty in the way I looked at things and the art of photography captured that in light, depth of field (focus), grain and composition. I saw art in the mundanity of everyday and these elements of photography made my subjects yet more beautiful. I was never the painter that my mother was, but I believe she gifted me with the joy of having an artist’s eye.
None of my photos are altered in Photoshop beyond changes in tonal and contrast levels and the cleaning of dust from the scans of my prints. One of the things that I loved about printing from film is that we could show how we framed a photo through the lens by printing the edges of the negative carrier with the image it contained. You will notice this proof that the photo was not cropped in many of my shots with the Canon AE-1. Some of the iPhone images are made with Hipstamatic. Unlike my prints from film, I take unabashed pleasure in that app’s creative filters. But none of the Sony A7ii digital images have been filtered.
It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that the idea for this website grew into a reality. While we were all in lockdown, we appreciated the internet more than ever. I saw many artistic endeavours take to the web while we were unable to give concerts or have exhibits in person. With my renewed interest in photography, I saw this as a way to share a retrospective of my work. This gallery contains work produced in multiple mediums as technology evolved. It wasn’t easy extracting these few photographs from 40 years of work. But these are the images that excite me most and I hope they will move you.
I expect to add more, as life will continue to impress with its allure. Enjoy. Life is beautiful — if you take the time to look.
